My Story. My Family.
How I became interested in genetics
I've been a Nurse Practitioner since 2012. I worked in internal medicine with some of the most chronically ill patients in my area. I knew from the beginning the healthcare I knew was missing something. After a few years, I shifted my focus to my family and their well-being, health and education. My two daughters both had health concerns that had no easy answer and certainly no answer I was finding in mainstream medicine. In 2020, just before the pandemic, our third daughter was born. She was born with a genetic disease called Galactosemia. This is a rare, metabolic disease. There is some research and some genetic specialists in our country, but the answers to the varied outcomes of children are lacking. This was the beginning of my personal and professional journey in functional medicine. For the past year, I've been practicing functional medicine. However, I still wanted to know more about how to further prevent illness and determine risks long before we see disease process. I knew our varying genetic make-ups are a big part of the answer; the ultimate root cause. In 2023, I completed a certification for DNA Health genetic testing. During this process, it felt like I learned more fascinating information about our bodies than I had learned in all of my education combined. I enjoy helping others learn how to adjust modifiable lifestyle factors and testing to their specific genetic make-up.
